Active Shooter Drill

Image of a pencil holder on a child's classroom desk.To help them stay quiet, I teach my second graders to make lists in their heads. They tell me they list colors, their favorite foods, animals, numbers from 1-100. Today, we’re huddled against the word wall across from the locked door. Connor, who’s always in trouble, who can’t make friends, who falls asleep in class, leans his body against mine and whispers the names of his classmates, alphabetically, the way they might appear in the newspaper: Amy, Arlo, Charlie, Dennis, David, Gigi, Katie D, Katie P, Lamar, Louisa, Marianna, Michael, Nellie, Olive, Quinn, Rosie, Sadie, Taylor B, Taylor G, Wylie.

  1. Wonderful but so sad that you have such a thing over there. In Australia such a drill doesn’t exist!

  2. Chilling! As a former 7th grade teacher, I feel this in my bones.

OM. I have tears in my heart and on my eyelids.
