Belongings

Black and white image of hangers in a closet. Before long, we began photographing our discarded clothes. Some pictures were taken during the act, others days later. Our belongings looked more delicate in daylight. One rule was never to move them for the composition’s sake. In hindsight, they seemed like remnants of another couple, another me, suspended in time like an Ikea prop. That was what he, too, said in the doorway before he left. He could no longer recognize the man in the pictures, though technically he wasn’t in any of them. Only the keepsakes of his travels. His ultramarine walking shoes, his wedding ring. The plane tickets.
