Coffee Bean

coffee bean-1Pretty Asian girl asks if she can sit across from me. Yes. Her bangs almost cover her eyes. She steals glances. I’ve never stolen anything. Not even a candy bar. Condoms from the health center don’t count. I steal glances back. I lower my laptop screen. It’s been almost a year since I’ve gotten lai — Not important. Can I buy you a coffee? That’ll work. Here we go. Moment of tru— moment of boyfriend entrance. He bends down like a sauropod eating a plant. He kisses her sloppily right there across from me. I lied. It’s been almost two years.

 

Oren Peleg is an accomplished pickup basketball player and after-school babysitter. He lives in Los Angeles, writes screenplays, and cooks, always striving for al dente.
