My customers are young women, with bizarre requests. On their clavicle, a spritz of their baby’s sweet, milky scent. Camel Blues, “so I can smell them after I quit,” in a 200 mL bottle, the largest the store offers. The stale air inside a nursing home. Garbage baking in the streets. The cinnamony, ticklish space between her girlfriend’s shoulder and neck. Diesel, sweat, burning foliage, blood’s metal smell. Mushroom risotto, the last dinner she prepared for her husband, in love with the dog-walker. She cries, and tells me that the slices of Shiitake looked like decapitated ears, suspended in rice.
