Garden Snake

Image of a green snake lurking in the dark. You fell for the wrong person at a bad time, because you are a long hungry rock baked sheath of muscle, because you are lord of all the low things, keeper of the leaf mulch, tender of the grass. Love was a plump rustle in the underbrush. You swallowed the twisting creature whole.

How you long to be lithe again, and lusty, rattling the daylilies; not a half-drunk, bloated, groaning captive of your own metabolism. There’s nothing to do now but wait it out, the slow putrescence, the scraps of pelt and whole bone—crazy, thirsty love again, just love.

Jennie Bricker divides her time between practicing law, practicing yoga, practicing writing, and practicing the flugelhorn. Her novel, Thirsty Creek, will be published in 2025.
