The pilot tells his wife life is miniature in his work: small armies of toiletries, itty bitty sewing kits, baby bottles of booze. His wife teases that every time he comes home, he looks smaller too. And he laughs. Except each second, she seems more distant, as though he’s observing her on land from the cockpit as the plane prays to max altitude. So far, she looks like a character in a model of a yet-to-be-built town. So far, he can’t hear her as she wonders if the grasslands of America look the same as those all over the world.
