Somewhere along the line, my heart stopped functioning properly. Its mechanics sound, its wiring not. Tests were ordered, and I lay still as the eye-of-God machines did their work. I learned new words. I Googled too much. My operation routine—yet there’d be questions on the other side. What ifs and what nows. The morning of my procedure, a man with a Russian accent shaved my chest, and my wife laughed, my monitor’s agitated blip-blip. I wanted to tell her so much, just in case, but I settled on I love you. Tick tock, said my imperfect heart. Tick tock.
