Summer of Sums

Image of sand blown across a beach boardwalk. We set off, not knowing it’s our last year of mental maths, my last year sitting in the back, with Dad shouting stuff like, ‘Signpost ahead – multiply the miles to Bodmin by the number of men in the Mini behind!’ It’s the year Mum uses a bad word when he won’t let her buy ice creams until we’ve drawn perfect parallelograms in the sand, the year we hear her through the tent wall, hissing about triangles. It’s the year they tell us, on the way home, why it’s time to learn about dividing, how some things no longer add up.

One of Chris Cottom’s stories was read aloud on the Esk Valley Railway between Middlesborough and Whitby. He once lived next door to JRR Tolkien.

I really like this story – a family saga in 100 words (the bio’s pretty cool, too).
