Swimming Lessons

Image of slush on asphaltWhat I remember of the 1996 blizzard: five years old in suburban New Jersey, I followed the neighbor kids out into deep snow. One girl declared we would have swimming lessons. On our stomachs, we arced our arms, scooted our bodies across the yard. Snow angels in motion.

This week, New York had its first snowfall in two years. My boots, dusty in the closet. A wet, meager layer of slush. I am not a mother yet, but I wonder whether my children will ever swim in the snow. Whether there will be anything left to kick our legs through.
