Tenancy

Image of a few empty hangers on a closet pole.On the last day in our rental, my husband and I begin the work of erasing ourselves. We unscrew burnt lightbulbs and scrub spice-dusted cabinets. I sweep embers from the fireplace and rip out the rosemary bush I used for all our Thanksgiving meals. My husband vacuums the room where we once crouched helplessly as our elderly dog died.

And as we leave, I remember moving into our previous apartment. Before unpacking, we stood in its tiny hallway. Facing each other, we stretched our tired limbs outwards like stars, trying to fill up as much borrowed space as we could.

love it. it hits “home”. we are packing right now to move into a new house we bought. But the memories we are taking with us! And saying goodbye to our pets burried in the back yard is so hard.

  2. Love it! This one will stick around in my mind for a long time.
