Circumnavigation

There are still places I can’t go. The Image of a gray tabby cat sitting in front of the produce stand at a bodega.bank with the no fee ATM. The gym, though I’m paying the monthly fee.

And Mr. Chen’s Market, where we would squeeze plump grapefruit and take whiffs of fresh ginger. I remember the shop cat, slinking her way through our legs—a needle pulling the threads that tethered our lives together. Had she been winding or unwinding?

These days I walk in circles around the city, avoiding our haunted places. I get my groceries delivered. A gruff man brings three heaving bags to the door, the flimsy paper handles slowly coming undone.
