Far from this Howling Corner

Photo of a gazebo being hit with waves. It took the gazebo, first, the one on the beach where we used to picnic, the one where we’d made our baby on a crickety night. It flipped our neighbors’ boats, flattened the school, then came for our roof. It screamed above as we bowed our heads and scrambled for shelter. It smashed the bed where our little girl had slept. It tore up the roads where she’d walked to class. It took places where we’d worked and people we had known. But our daughter was hours away, far from this howling corner. The rest we could handle. Anything else.

Charmaine Wilkerson’s stories have appeared in Best Microfiction 2019 and elsewhere. She is the author of the novella-in-flash “How to Make a Window Snake.”
