Photo Story: Talismans

Image of a figure at night, confronting a bright light.

The October night sky was stretched out, lit up with the drift from the Milky Way.

The fire accelerated, rose. Smoke angled off to the left, curved like a raptor’s lifted wing. He filled his arms with her clothing. Dresses, flowing summer pastels and autumn jewel-tones, still on their hangers. Her fragrant sweaters, their scents of jasmine and ginger, draped over the crooks of his arms.

A pair of lightweight fawn sandals, flecked with scars from pebbles, dangled from two fingers.

And the feathered mask.

The one from New Orleans.

He tossed it into the highest flame and it flew.
